In Sunday night's clash at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai Indians (MI) opener Rohit Sharma put up a brave fight against the arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

However, with minimal assistance from the middle order, the former MI captain saw his century rendered futile as the hosts suffered a 20-run loss in the exhilarating IPL 2024 encounter.

Meanwhile, CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad took to Instagram to share a heartfelt story, congratulating Rohit for his heroics with the bat.

Rohit's unbeaten innings of 105 runs from 62 balls marked his second century in 17 years in the T20 league, featuring 11 boundaries and five well-timed sixes.

However, Mumbai struggled to maintain the required run rate and lost crucial wickets after a promising start, leading to their fourth defeat in IPL 2024.

Although it came in a lost cause, a T20 century is rare, and hence Rohit’s efforts were celebrated by many in the cricketing fraternity after the match.

Former players, experts, and current cricketers alike lauded the MI opener for his superb century. The impact of his innings was so profound that it prompted the opposition captain Ruturaj Gaikwad to share a post on social media.

In reality, the post was made by Ruturaj's wife, which he then re-shared. A photo of Ruturaj congratulating Rohit was initially uploaded by CSK's Instagram handle and was later reposted by Ruturaj himself.

Rohit appeared shattered and disheartened as he walked past the players at the conclusion of Mumbai's innings.

MI were on the brink of breaking into the top four in the ongoing IPL season before succumbing to a defeat, their fourth in this tournament, against CSK.

MI currently sits in eighth place in the table with four points and a net run rate of -0.234.
