Former Australian legendary bowler Glenn McGrath has opined that Jasprit Bumrah has to put in extra work off the field to prolong his career. With Bumrah’s unorthodox action and express pace, McGrath believes he endures more stress on his body compared to other bowlers.
Bumrah, India’s generational pace bowler, has been struggling with injuries lately. He injured his lower back during the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Series and has been on the sidelines ever since.
He missed the Champions Trophy and is likely to be unavailable for the first few games of the IPL 2025 season for Mumbai Indians.
Glenn McGrath Shares Key Advice To Injured Jasprit Bumrah
In a recent interview with TOI, former Australian legend Glenn McGrath compared fast bowlers to cars as they need to refuel regularly to keep going.
“He puts more stress on his body than the other bowlers. He has found ways to manage it, but unfortunately not all the time. He has done it before (making a comeback from injury), he will know better than anyone (about) the recovery time, the time in the gym. He is not as young as he used to be, so he has to be smarter about what he does,” McGrath said.
Comparing himself to Jasprit Bumrah, McGrath remarked that he had a bigger fuel tank since he bowled at a lower speed, whereas Bumrah, with his rapid pace, must be even more cautious.
“He has to work even harder off the field. Being a fast bowler is like driving a car. If you do not top it up with fuel, you are going to run out of fuel sooner or later. My fuel tank was bigger than Jasprit's because I did not bowl as quickly as him,” he added.
Meanwhile, reports suggest that Bumrah’s rehabilitation is progressing well, but the team management is prioritising his recovery ahead of India’s Test series against England in June.
Shane Bond Warns Bumrah Of Career-Ending Injury Risk
Former New Zealand bowler Shane Bond has made a stern warning regarding Jasprit Bumrah's recurring back injury, claiming that another mishap in the same area can prove to be a career-spoiler.
Bond, who mentored Bumrah during his time with Mumbai Indians (MI), revealed his deep concerns about the pacer's long-term future amid recurring injuries to Bumrah’s lower back.
Bond also pinpointed the sudden transition from T20s to Tests as a major risk factor, especially with India’s five-Test series in England starting June 28, just a month after IPL 2025 ends on May 25.
