Bangladesh cricket stalwart Mushfiqur Rahim has sent a clear message to selectors and players alike by emphasising the importance of fitness over age when it comes to selection for the national team. Rahim has called for a shift in mindset where fitness becomes a priority criterion for selection, regardless of a player's age.

A 36-year-old Mushfiqur Rahim guided Fortune Barishal to the finals of the BPL 2024 season. The former Bangladesh captain retired from the T20 format in international cricket after the Asia Cup in 2022. But his recent performances suggest Rahim still has what it takes to succeed in the shorter format.

However, after getting sidelined several times without any valid reasoning, Rahim called it quits.

Meanwhile, in a recent media interview, Mushfiqur Rahim explained the need for a change in the selection committee's mindset when it comes to the T20 format. He said fitness and form should be the top most priority for national selection. Age is just a number, and it shouldn't act as a barrier.

It did for him, and it left him hurt. Rahim added that he can still beat any youngster in fitness on any given day.

"It hurts me. I can guarantee you that I am better than most players in terms of fitness. I can write it down. More than age, I think the criteria should be fitness and performance. Age is just a number," Rahim said.

The former Bangladesh captain cited the example of his present BPL team, Fortune Barishal, who succeeded while having three players above the age of 35 in the lineup.

Rahim went on to add that while youth energy is paramount in the T20 format, the addition of experienced veteran players can create a nice balance in any lineup.

According to Rahim, veteran players shouldn't be sidelined just on the age parameter and must receive an opportunity to write their own legacy with sheer talent and desired match fitness.

"I think this is a wrong concept. You need experience in every format. New players will come, the older ones will go, but they will combine well to build the team. We want to leave a legacy. It is supposed to be smooth sailing," Rahim concluded.

That being said, Fortune Barishal will clash with Comilla Victorians to bag the BPL 2024 season trophy and emerge as the undisputed champions.
