The IPL fever is back but simultaneously, the fans are also focused on India's Test set-up as the WTC runners-up will take on England for a five-match Test series starting on June 20. At present, India are without a captain as Rohit Sharma recently announced his Test retirement.

Meanwhile, there is a chatter around the new leader and reports suggest that Shubman Gill is likely to be appointed as the next captain. The news has left internet divided as a section of fans are happy with the appointment, while others want an experienced player to lead the side.

Ashwin Backs Jadeja For Test Captaincy

In the latest events, former India spinner, R Ashwin, who announced his retirement in December 2024, praised Gill for his leadership skills as seen in IPL 2025, but also backed Ravindra Jadeja to be the next India captain for WTC cycle 2025-27.

"Let's not forget, Jadeja is the most experienced player in the team. He should be in the conversation. If you're willing to train a new guy for two years and then make him captain, Jadeja can do that for two years too. They (India) can even play him as vice-captain (under Jadeja). It will seem like I'm throwing in a wildcard," he said on his youtube channel, Ash ki baat.

R Ashwin Praises Shubman Gill

Despite backing Jadeja, Ashwin was full of praise for Gill and remarked that he hopes for Gujarat to qualify for IPL 2025 playoffs.

"I hope Gujarat Titans qualify for the IPL playoffs. If Gill gains honour there, it might make his transition to leadership easier. But captaincy, especially in Tests, is not about one good season. A leader should know what's happening in first-class cricket too," Ashwin said.

It is worth noting that there are reports that Gill might be announced as the new India captain in a press-conference in upcoming days.
