Shubman Gill will be carrying butterflies in his stomach at the prospect of entering his maiden men's World Cup for India. The nerves and anxiety would be quite high, especially as he is aware of the wave of expectations he is carrying behind him after enjoying a tremendous rise as a top-order player in 50-overs cricket.

Gill is touted by many experts to be the best young talent in the world and a prime candidate to finish with the highest run-getter's tag in this edition of the quadrennial event. Playing for India has always been a matter of immense pressure but the 24-year-old would be feeling the heat more than ever now.

One of the most elegant batters to watch when in full flow, Gill boasts of a tremendous record in ODIs in what are still early days for him at the international stage. He is averaging a whopping 66.10 with a strike rate of 102.84 after 35 innings and has made six centuries, including a double hundred.

One of the experts keen to see how the childhood prodigy shapes up at his maiden World Cup in the Indian jersey is former skipper Sourav Ganguly, who said Gill is the stand-out young talent on show at the marquee tournament this time and he is "looking forward" to watching him bat against the world's best attacks.

"He has played brilliant": Sourav Ganguly on Shubman Gill

"Many good players were there. But I am looking forward to watching Shubman Gill. He has played brilliantly," Ganguly told India Today, anticipating the youngster to deliver special feats during the World Cup on much-familiar Indian tracks.

Gill, who replaced One-Day great Shikhar Dhawan and cemented his place at the top alongside skipper Rohit Sharma earlier this year, is currently the highest run-getter of 2023 in 50-overs cricket. The aggressive right-hander has amassed 1,230 runs at a jaw-dropping average of 72.35 from 20 ODIs at a strike-rate above 100.

He was in terrific form during the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka and made half-centuries versus Nepal and Pakistan before scoring an exceptional hundred against Bangladesh. Gill continued his dominance in the home series against arch-rivals Australia and won the 'Player of the Series' award.
