West Indies suffered a heart-breaking blow as they were defeated by Scotland on Saturday, thus missing out on their chance to secure a spot in the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup in India. This marks the first time in the tournament's history that the West Indies will not be among the contenders, signaling a significant downfall for the two-time World Cup champions.

Bishop & Brathwaite reflect on West Indies' disappointing WC Qualifiers campaign

Reflecting on the team's unsuccessful campaign, former West Indies cricketers, Ian Bishop and Carlos Brathwaite, analyzed the factors that led to the team’s unfortunate exit from the race to the ICC Cricket World Cup.

Bishop reckoned that West Indies have experienced a significant decline in their performance. He added that despite attempts to address the issue by changing captains, coaches, or any other relevant factors, the outcomes have consistently deviated from the anticipated results.

“It’s been written and signed. It’s been a dramatic fall from grace for the former two times winner of the Cricket World Cup, two time World T20 champions. Nothing has worked for them be it change of captain, change of coach, change who you want, the results have still gone against what was expected,” said Bishop in a post-match conversation posted by the ICC.

In the crucial match against Scotland, the Windies needed a victory to maintain their chances, but their hopes were dashed as they succumbed to a seven-wicket defeat at the Harare Sports Club. This loss marked their third defeat in the tournament, following disappointments against Zimbabwe and the Netherlands.

According to Bishop, although West Indies entered the tournament as a full member nation with high expectations, their performance in the group stages was disappointing both in terms of fielding and batting.

“West Indies are a full member nation. They must have come with a high hope but the group stages were disappointment in the level of performance certainly in the field and with the bat, it begs the question is it an acceptable level by the West Indies’ display,” added Bishop.

Opening up on the same, Brathwaite said that it had been a long time coming. He acknowledged that troubles had been experienced in the past but believed that the current situation was the lowest point.

“It has been a long time coming. We missed out on T20 World Cup last year. There has been troubles in the past but this is the lowest you can go,” said Brathwaite.

According to Brathwaite, there are several issues that needed to be addressed. He mentioned that one of those issues was the identification of talent, but he emphasized the importance of developing that talent as well.
