Indian opening batsman Shubman Gill will start out as one of the players to watch out for during his team’s three-match T20I series in South Africa. The 24-year-old recently turned up for his country at the 2023 World Cup, before he distanced himself from his side’s home T20I challenge against the visiting Australians.

In lieu of next year’s T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies, the series against the Proteas serve as an integral chapter in India’s cricketing schedule, with players like Gill aiming to maximise their potential in order to make it to the tournament squad.

Ahead of the second T20I against South Africa, the dazzling opener talked about the significance of the series, and also revealed how he perfected his pull shot in his childhood itself.

Shubman Gill speaks on how he perfected pull

Shubman Gill holds an expansive gallery of orthodox stroke-play, ranging from elegant pulls and alluring drives down the ground. When asked how he perfected his pull shot, the cricketer said that he started mastering the art during his younger days itself by using a plastic ball at the advice of his father.

Notably, his father Lakhwinder Singh was an aspiring cricketer himself before helped his son Shubman realize his potential to the fullest.

Shubman Gill said:

“I started practicing the shot from my younger days, I started with a plastic ball on a cement pitch. It was my father's idea.”

Gill also signified the importance of India’s short T20I series in South Africa, considering the ‘Men in Blue’ are allotted only a handful of T20 international fixtures in their road towards next year’s T20 World Cup 2024. He added:

“There aren't many international T20s before the World Cup. In terms of that, very important series.”

Shubman Gill made his T20I debut earlier this year at the Wankhede Stadium in a match against Sri Lanka. The Punjab-based cricketer has so far represented his country in 11 T20Is and is currently among the leading contenders as India’s opening batsman to travel to the West Indies next year for the T20 World Cup.
