It is important to mention that, mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy has officially joined India’s ODI squad ahead of the upcoming three-match series against England. Initially not part of the squad, his presence in Nagpur’s training camp sparked speculation about his inclusion in the Champions Trophy 2025 as well. The star bowler has been in sensational form recently as he has scalped 14 wickets against England in five T20Is.

Varun Chakaravarthy Inclusion, Gambhir's Masterstroke

According to recent reports by PTI, India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, was behind the move as he wanted the in-form spinner to maintain his rhythm and bowl to Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Rishabh Pant in the nets.

The PTI report further stated that the mystery spinner is not the part of Tamil Nadu's Ranji Trophy squad and Gambhir took the decision and called him to join the Indian ODI team merely as a 'net bowler'.

"As of now, the team management wanted Varun to bowl in ODI squad nets ahead of England series. Varun doesn't play red-ball cricket. With domestic white ball season already concluded, he doesn't have any assignments till start of IPL end March. He is in good rhythm and they want him to continue that," a senior BCCI source told PTI.

While Chakaravarthy has been added to the ODI squad, his chances of making the Champions Trophy squad still remain slim. According to PTI,  a senior BCCI source revealed that if India wants Varun to be included in the Champions Trophy squad then the team management would require approval from chief selector Ajit Agarkar.

It is important to note that, the final squad submission deadline for the Champions Trophy is February 12.

"The selectors have already picked four spinners and you only have three ODI games. But if team management wants Varun, it will certainly have to speak to the chairman of selection committee Ajit Agarkar. Whether they intend to or not, is still not known."

For now, Chakaravarthy’s ODI debut against England could be crucial in determining his fate for the marquee tournament.
