'I Wouldn't Want To..', Curtly Ambrose Opens Up On Tendulkar-Kohli Comparison

Virat Kohli recently became the fourth Indian player to feature in 500 international matches, only behind Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, and Rahul Dravid. Interestingly, Kohli's overall numbers were better than Tendulkar's when the latter played his 500th match for India.

Kohli is already a modern-day great; however, his feats are constantly compared to Tendulkar's, which many feel is wrong, given how both played in different eras. Former West Indies legend Curtly Ambrose has said that the comparison shouldn't happen.

Ambrose toyed with opposition batters during his playing days and had several memorable duels with Tendulkar as well in the 1990s. Speaking to Rev Sports, Ambrose praised Tendulkar and said he does not indulge in comparisons.

Here's what Ambrose said

"I wouldn’t want to compare both players. Sachin Tendulkar was a great player, and achieved just about everything in cricket. You can’t take away from his cricketing knowledge and the way he played. I’m not the kind of guy who would like to compare."

Kohli underwent a lean patch between 2019 and 2022 but now has managed to regain lost form, amassing 984 international runs with four tons and two fifties across formats in 2023.

The 59-year-old further stated that Kohli will shut his critics down and still has a lot to contribute to cricket.

"Every great player goes through a patch where they fail to score hundreds or fail to be consistent. He is still a quality player, I’m really happy he got a hundred. Unfortunately, it’s against the West Indies, but that should do his confidence a world of good, and shut up some people who think he is over the hill. He’s not, he still has a lot to contribute to Indian cricket and cricket in general."

The former India captain will be in action when Rohit Sharma and Co. take on West Indies in a three-ODI series starting Thursday.
