Despite being Australia's best ODI bowler since the 2019 World Cup, Adam Zampa's form in the recent series against South Africa was worrisome. The bowler went a record-equalling 113 runs in his quote of overs in the fourth ODI at Centurion.

With Australia taking on India and the upcoming World Cup 2023 in sight, Zampa's form becomes highly crucial for the Baggy Greens to win a record sixth 50-overs title.

On the eve of the first ODI at Mohali, skipper Pat Cummins hinted about Zampa's role in the series, which could see the leg-spinner dish out overs in the death.

As quoted by India Today, Cummins explained Zampa's importance heading into a jam-packed two months. The leg-spinner has claimed 17 wickets in the last overs in ODIs since WC 2019, as opposed to Cummins' 12 and Mitchell Starc's nine adding substance to the team management's plans.

Here's what Cummins said

"Zamps (Adam Zampa), he's effective at not only keeping the run rate down but he can take a couple of wickets at the death, which is really important as well and sometimes it's a bit harder for pace bowlers to do that, I wouldn't be surprised if we keep two, three or four overs up our sleeve with him."

Cummins further provided insights about how Australian management wants to use this ODI series in preparation for the WC 2023, which starts next month in India.

"We want to strike a balance between getting used to these conditions, hopefully winning some games, but also we don't want to get to that first game (of the World Cup against India on October 8) and already be cooked."

Australia and India will also lock horns in a five-T20I series, which will begin post the showpiece event. The World Cup 2023 commences on October 5 and will see England and New Zealand clash in tournament opener.
