Rohit Sharma, the star Indian batter, experienced a mixed season in the IPL 2024, where Mumbai Indians (MI) ended up at the bottom of the IPL points table, becoming the first team to be eliminated.

The five-time champions have had a disappointing campaign, culminating in an 18-run loss to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in their final fixture.

In a post-match press conference, MI Head Coach Mark Boucher discussed Rohit Sharma's future with the franchise ahead of the next IPL auction.

MI head coach on Rohit Sharma's future plans

"For me, he is a master of his own destiny. It's a big auction next season—who knows what's going to happen?"

Reflecting on Sharma's performance, Boucher noted that the season was characterised by two distinct halves for the former MI skipper.

Sharma started the season strongly, showcasing his batting prowess, but his form tapered off as the tournament progressed. Boucher emphasised that despite the challenges, Sharma was moving in the right direction, enabling the team to compete effectively.

Mumbai Indians introduced a new captain, Hardik Pandya, in December 2023, replacing Rohit Sharma. This transition sparked speculation that Sharma might be released ahead of the upcoming auctions. Throughout the season, Sharma scored 417 runs in 13 innings, including one century and one half-century.

Boucher reflects on MI's poor season

In a recent discussion with Boucher, Sharma reflected on the season and hinted at his future plans.

"I had a discussion with Rohit Sharma last night. We reviewed the season this year. After that, I asked him what's next? and Rohit said 'the World Cup'," Boucher recounted.

Rohit Sharma will now turn his focus to leading Team India in the T20 World Cup, set to begin on June 2 in the USA and West Indies.
