Young opener, Yashasvi Jaiswal, emerged as the 17th Indian cricketer to score a century on his Test debut in the ongoing first game against West Indies on Thursday. With an unbeaten 143 runs off 350 deliveries, Jaiswal led India to a dominant 162-run lead in the first innings following West Indies' dismal 150 on the first day of the Test in Dominica.

Jaiswal's childhood coach not surprised by his brilliant debut

Jaiswal’s childhood coach, Jwala Singh, who had mentored the prodigious batter in his formative years, is elated at the player's outstanding performance.

While speaking to PTI from UK, Singh explained that he had anticipated Jaiswal's successful debut considering his four-year track record in domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League (IPL) where he has consistently faced world-class bowlers under high pressure.

"I am happy to see him grow. I had some feeling that he would start well. He has spent four good seasons in the IPL and also in domestic cricket. He has played most of the world-class bowlers under a lot of pressure, especially in the IPL," said Jwala.

The coach further emphasized the importance of developing a knack for scoring runs. Singh revealed that he advises his students to focus on the ball rather than the bowler and respond aptly to each delivery.

According to Singh, regardless of the match format, a batsman should remain present in the moment, treating each ball on its merit and relying on his own capabilities.

"He has the idea about playing with top quality bowlers. As a player, it is important to have the habit of making runs. As a coach I always teach my players to see the ball and not the bowler, and try to react to the ball well. I am glad that Yashasvi is able to do this on the ground and is proving me right," added Singh.

It is pertinent to mention that Jaiswal's journey to success has been marked by considerable struggles. He has overcome the challenges of a disadvantaged upbringing, having lived in tents and sold street food to fund his cricketing aspirations. Following his noteworthy performance in domestic cricket, he was scouted by the Rajasthan Royals for the IPL.

Jaiswal made his IPL debut in 2020, but it was during the 2023 season that he truly shone, racking up 625 runs across 14 matches at a remarkable strike rate of 163.61 and an average of 48.08. His performance included a hundred and five half-centuries. His exceptional show in the IPL paved the way for his selection in the Indian team for the West Indies tour.
