Mumbai Indians, under the new leadership of Hardik Pandya, faced an early exit from the IPL 2024, being the first team ruled out of the playoffs contention.

Amid their struggles, former Royal Challengers Bengaluru star AB de Villiers has voiced his opinions about Hardik's leadership approach, which may not be meshing well with the seasoned players in the team.

AB de Villiers Critiques Hardik Pandya's Captaincy Style

"The captaincy style of Hardik Pandya is quite bravado. It’s ego-driven in a way, chest out. I don’t think how he walks on the field is always genuine, but he has decided that is his way of captaincy," de Villiers explained on his YouTube channel.

This bravado style, according to de Villiers, clashes with the expectations of the experienced players at MI. He suggests that while this method worked with younger teams like the Gujarat Titans, it failed to inspire confidence among veterans.

"Almost like MS. Cool, calm, collective, always got your chest out. But when you play with a lot of experienced players, guys who have been around for ages... they don't buy into that."

This comparison to MS Dhoni's renowned leadership highlights how a more understated approach might be necessary when handling a team filled with seasoned professionals.

De Villiers' comments have sparked discussions about the internal dynamics within Mumbai Indians, especially following reports of discontent and meetings among senior players like Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah regarding Hardik's leadership. This disharmony may have contributed to the team's lackluster performance and morale.

Despite the challenges, Hardik's performance has also been under scrutiny. With only 198 runs and 12 wickets in 12 matches, his contribution has been less than stellar.

As MI prepares to face Kolkata Knight Riders on May 11 at Eden Gardens, it remains to be seen how Hardik will navigate through the remainder of the season amidst growing criticism and pressure.
