Australia’s head coach, Andrew McDonald stated that Australian batting stalwart, David Warner is ‘probably’ the greatest all-format player. McDonald heaped massive praise on Warner, while mentioning that replacing the veteran opener in Test cricket would be tough.

"In time, he will probably go down...but probably at the moment as it sits, he is probably our greatest ever all-three format player. He is going to drop out of one of those formats in terms of Test match cricket. He will be a loss,” the coach stated.

David Warner will be playing his farewell Test in the upcoming third Test match against Pakistan, starting 3rd January 2023. Ahead of the start of the ongoing Pakistan series, some of the critics questioned his position in Test side despite not being in the best of form in the longest format for quite some time.

However, the southpaw shut them down by playing a sensational knock of 164 runs in 211 balls in the very first Test match and it set the tone for the series win, eventually.

Australia’s team management also deserves a lot of credit for backing their veteran star and persisting him as their first-choice opener. Coach McDonald acknowledges the experience that Warner brings with him and mentioned that the team had never thought of excluding him from the Test playing XI.

“I know that people have been gunning for him for a period of time, but for us internally, we have seen the great value in what he brings to the table, hence why we have kept picking him. He repaid a bit of that faith in the first Test match. He's going to be hard to replace. Someone who strikes at 70 averaging 45, and most ever runs as an Australian opener.”

Australia have taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in the two-match Test series against Pakistan. They crushed Pakistan in the first Test and notched a massive 360-run win. The visitors showed some fight in the second Test but couldn’t cross the finish line. Australia defeated Pakistan by 79 runs in the end.

The third and final Test is slated to be played at Sydney Cricket Ground, starting 3rd January 2024.
