Kolkata Knight Riders had an outstanding IPL 2024 campaign as they clinched the trophy following their one-sided win against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final. Shreyas Iyer led the Knight Riders to perfection, helping them win their third IPL title. 

Considering Iyer's incredible leadership attributes, former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa backed the gritty Mumbai batter to lead the national side. 

As quoted by Sportskeeda, Uthappa named Iyer as one of the biggest contenders for India's captaincy, keeping him ahead of Shubman Gill in the pecking order. 

"I am going to say it here. He is going to be the future India captain. I think he is next in line, maybe even ahead of Shubman Gill. He has got the character and wherewithal to handle a team. I think there’s a lot he has learnt this season."

Besides scoring 351 runs in 14 innings at an average of 39 and a strike rate of 146.86, Iyer was impressive as a captain, as his astute leadership worked wonders for the franchise. 

However, currently, Iyer finds himself in troubled waters after BCCI excluded him from the annual central contract. Therefore, KKR's IPL 2024 triumph might lead to Iyer's resurgence, with the cricketer likely to re-earn his central contract in the near future.
