In a conversation with sports journalist Vimal Kumar, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma opens up about his bonding with head coach Rahul Dravid, under whom he made his international debut against Ireland in 2007. Rahul Dravid took over the coaching responsibilities following India’s dismal exit from the 2021 T20 World Cup in UAE. Rohit Sharma was subsequently named as the skipper for India across all three formats after Dravid’s appointment as a head coach was approved.

Rohit sheds light on Dravid's extraordinary coaching philosophy which has helped him garner a lot of respect. The 36-year-old revealed that the head coach puts every little effort into ensuring that there is no communication gap between the players and the support staff.

"I made my debut under him, though, I didn't play long. He doesn't like any communication gap with any player or support staff. His first rule is to communicate."

The Indian skipper further expressed that he has a great deal of respect for Dravid firstly as a player and then as a sporting personality.

"I have a huge respect for him (Rahul Dravid) for what he is as a person firstly and then obviously as a cricketer. It's because you need to be a good person first and then a cricketer, footballer, doctor, etc.”

Much further into the conversation, Rohit was asked about his intent to play 100 tests for India. In response, Rohit stated that he is someone who likes being in the present rather than focusing on long-term goals.

"I am not the type of person who thinks too far. For me, the Asia Cup and the World Cup are a priority. Right now I am focusing on Asia Cup. We'll see what happens after that. We can't forget the Australia series. So my motto is to focus on what I am doing now, rather than the future."

India is at a critical juncture in the ongoing Asia Cup tournament as they gear up to face Pakistan in the Super 4 match on Sunday. It remains to be seen how Rahul Dravid and company combat their arch-rivals in an all-important showdown on September 10.
