'Don't See Anyone Getting Close' - Chris Gayle Lauds Virat Kohli's 50th Century Feat

Chris Gayle applauded Virat Kohli's remarkable achievement of scoring 50 One-Day International centuries and prophesied no one would nudge close to the Indian legend in the future.

The West Indies great, who has formed a great bond with Kohli since their stint together for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in IPL, believes his astonishing tally of ODI hundreds will remain an unmatched figure for times to come.

Kohli achieved a great landmark during the recently-concluded ICC World Cup 2023 when he dominated New Zealand for a terrific knock of 117 off 113 deliveries in the semifinal played in Mumbai. With his idol and maestro Sachin Tendulkar present in the packed crowd, the 35-year-old completed an emotional half-century of centuries in his beloved format.

The bonafide modern-day great had entered the quadrennial event two hundreds behind his inspiration and hero but ended up surpassing Tendulkar after finishing with an incredible tally of 765 runs in 11 innings, including hundreds also against Bangladesh and South Africa.

Gayle Foresees Kohli's ODI Century Record Standing Intact

Notably, even Kohli's overall tally for World Cup 2023 was a record in the history of One-Day Internationals. The Indian giant not only surpassed Tendulkar's highest World Cup tally of 673 runs recorded in the 2003 edition but also eclipsed the list of all top run-getters for individual iterations of the marquee competition. No one before Kohli had made as many runs in a World Cup.

"Virat Kohli to get the 50 ODI Century is unbelievable. It was just fantastic to break the record of legendary player like Sachin Tendulkar. And I don't see anyone getting close to that record," Gayle told IANS during an interview.

Kohli, however, stood heartbroken despite his humoungous feat paving the way for a much-deserved 'Player of the Tournament' trophy as India suffered a painstaking defeat in the final of the World Cup 2023 against Australia in Ahmedabad.

The cricketer is currently on a break to spend time with his family and overcome the setback. Rested from the ongoing T20I series versus Australia, reports suggest Kohli could extend his absence to the limited-overs section of the upcoming all-format trip to South Africa before returning for the two-match Test series, starting December 26.
