'Disappointing To End...,' Ravi Ashwin Lets His Pain Out After WTC Final Defeat

Despite making back-to-back appearances in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) in 2021 and 2023, India have failed to lift the mace even once, first losing the inaugural edition to New Zealand, and then getting humiliated by Australia on Sunday at The Oval.

Led by Rohit Sharma, India were outplayed in all departments by the Pat Cummins-captained side in over 13 sessions of Test cricket. Needing 444 to win, India headed into the final day with seven wickets in hand, however, brilliant bowling, and rather poor batting, ensured Australia won the encounter in the morning session, and by a massive 209-run margin.

India's leading spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who was excluded from the XI, expressed his views on the WTC 2021-2023 Cycle as a whole on the social platform Twitter.

Ashwin, who is the third-highest wicket-taker in WTC 2021-23 cycle with 61, congratulated Australia and then thanked his teammates and coaching staff for the support over the past two years.

Here's what Ashwin tweeted

"Congratulations Australia on winning this #WTCFinal and closing out this cycle of test cricket. It is disappointing to end up on the wrong side of things, but nevertheless, it was a great effort over the last 2 years or so to get here in the first place. Amidst all the chaos and scathing assessments, I feel it’s very important to acknowledge all my teammates who played in this cycle and, most importantly, the coaching and support staffs who have held on like a rock of support."

Strangely, Ashwin was included in India's playing XI in the WTC Final 2021 against winners New Zealand despite likely conditions for the tweaker.

Nevertheless, Ashwin's next international assignment will be against West Indies when India tours Caribbean Islands in July.
