Even before the start of the Australian tour, Team India have been jolted with the news that Rohit Sharma, the skipper of the side might miss the first Test in Perth due to personal reasons. The reason has not been revealed, but it is believed that he is set to become a father for the second time.

Without Rohit's availability, the batting order looks weak, and recently, former India captain, Sunil Gavaskar criticised BCCI's decision to allow Rohit to take a break for the all-important first Test match. Gavaskar further asserted that if Rohit returns for the rest of the tour, he should only play as a player and not the captain.

Gavaskar backed Jasprit Bumrah to lead the side for the entirety of the series as he questioned Rohit's decision-making ahead of the crucial series, Down Under.

However, Rohit got a support in the form of former Aussie captain, Aaron Finch, who backed the decision of the Indian skipper and took a dig at Gavaskar. When asked if Rohit should play the first Test, Finch straightaway said, "No."

He further added: “I disagree with Sunny on that totally,” Finch stated. “Rohit Sharma is the captain of the Indian cricket team. If you need to stay at home because your wife’s going to have a baby… that’s such a beautiful moment… and you take all the time that you need in that regard.”

The importance of upcoming series cannot be denied

India had a horrendous series against New Zealand as the visiting side inflicted a 3-0 whitewash. Rohit Sharma, the captain came under scrutiny as he failed to deliver, both as a leader and as a batter.

He couldn't even cross the 100-run mark in 6 innings as India got outplayed in all the three Tests.

With India losing the series, the importance of the upcoming Australia tour has tripled. India have slipped at number 2 in the WTC points table and now need to defeat the Aussies, 4-0 to seal their place in the finals.
