In the lead-up to the T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and USA, former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif has expressed his hope that the selectors will endorse veteran opener Rohit Sharma as the captain of the national side. The discussion around Rohit's captaincy gained momentum after India's heart-wrenching loss in the ODI World Cup final.

Rohit's leadership skills came under the spotlight during the 2023 World Cup, where he steered the Men in Blue to the final. Mohammad Kaif commended Rohit's tactical acumen and believes that his experience and aggressive batting approach will be invaluable in the T20 format.

Here's what he said:

"You need skipper Rohit more than batter Rohit to lead the team in T20 World Cup 2024. Rohit Sharma has to be there because he has got the leadership quality. The way he led in the 50 overs World Cup, he has done a fantastic job as a leader...India will need his experience in T20s too. Rohit as a skipper as a batter did a fantastic job, which India will need in T20s as well."

While Rohit Sharma had initially been expected to resume captaincy from the South Africa tour, he requested a break from the entire white-ball leg, aligning with Virat Kohli's decision. During Rohit's absence, Suryakumar Yadav will lead the T20 side against South Africa, with KL Rahul taking over the captaincy duties for the ODIs.

India is scheduled to play a series of T20Is and ODIs before entering the World Test Championship with a two-match Test series, offering the team ample opportunities to fine-tune their strategies under new leadership.
