'Babar Should Stay Away,' Ex-Skipper Names Surprise Pick For Pakistan Captaincy

Former Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik believes that Babar Azam should stay away from captaincy and focus only on his batting. Recently, Pakistan suffered a heart-breaking group-stage exit from the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean.

Babar Azam, who was reinstated as Pakistan's T20I captain, received massive backlash following the team's abysmal World Cup campaign.

'Babar Should Stay Away, Fakhar should lead Pak' - Shoaib Malik

Malik thinks Babar's unsuccessful captaincy stint might impact his performance as a batter. So, considering his importance for Pakistan, the former allrounder has advised the Lahore-born cricketer to concentrate on his batting.

"As for his captaincy, my firm stance is that he should play only as a player. That’s my opinion. When he plays as a player, he can do wonders for the team. But in my opinion, he should stay away from leadership,” Malik was quoted as saying by Cricket Pakistan.

Furthermore, Malik reckons swashbuckling batter Fakhar Zaman could be a great option to succeed Babar as the white-ball captain, owing to his aggressive gameplay.

“According to today’s fearless cricket, Fakhar Zaman should be considered for white ball captaincy because he has the sense and leadership capacity for it," he added.

After a forgettable T20 World Cup campaign, Pakistan are gearing up to face Bangladesh in a two-match Test series on home soil.

Shan Masood will lead the Test team, while the PCB will take a final call on the white-ball captaincy very soon.
