Ahead of the 2023 World Cup which is less than two months away, the debate on India's no. 4 batting slot has started again. KL Rahul, Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer, all three can bat at no. 4 for India in ODIs.

Speaking on the much-debated topic, former India captain and BCCI President Sourav Ganguly said that anyone can bat at no. 4, and that no batsman ever really has a designated batting position.

"No. 4 is just a number, anyone can fit in," Ganguly said at an event in Mumbai. "I really don't think that anybody is born as an opener or No. 3 or No. 4. I had started in the middle order in one-day cricket and was asked to open when Sachin [Tendulkar] was the captain. Sachin also started at No. 6; when he opened, he became a world-class player", Ganguly said at an event in Mumbai.

"So anybody can play at No. 4. There's Virat Kohli for No. 4; there's Shreyas Iyer once he does well at the Asia Cup; there's KL Rahul. India has enormous talent," Ganguly added.

The Asia Cup, which gets underway later this month, will provide a better picture of India's batting order.

The BCCI announced the squad for the tournament earlier today. Both Iyer and KL Rahul have recovered from their respective injuries and have been named in the squad for the Asia Cup. Youngster Tilak Verma, who impressed in IPL 2023 and subsequently in the series against West Indies, has also been named in the squad.
