Ish Sodhi completes 150 T20I wickets [Source: @BLACKCAPS/x]
New Zealand spinner Ish Sodhi became the latest entrant to breach the 150-wicket club in T20I cricket. The 32-year-old achieved the feat through his match-winning spell against Zimbabwe in the final league fixture of the Zimbabwe T20I tri-series 2025 at the Harare Sports Club in July 2025.
Including Sodhi, only three bowlers in the world have attained the feat of collecting 150 or more wickets in the truncated format of the game, including a fellow ‘Black Caps’ cricketer and an enigma machine from Afghanistan. Here is a look at each of the three bowlers in T20I history with 150 or more wickets to their names.
3. Ish Sodhi – 150 wickets in 126 matches
Ish Sodhi completed 150 T20I wickets in 126 matches. The cricketer made his T20I debut for New Zealand back in July 2014 during an away series against West Indies, and celebrated the occasion with the key wicket of half-centurion Andre Fletcher in a match-winning cause for his team. While it took Sodhi 42 matches to reach his first 50 T20I wickets, it took him just another 36 games to reach his century.
The leg-spinner enjoyed a prolific run at the 2016 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India, where he picked up 10 wickets in just five matches of the tournament at an average of 12. So far, Ish Sodhi has snared four four-wicket hauls in his career, with his best bowling performance of 4-12 coming against Zimbabwe back in 2015. He also picked up a four-fer each against Trans-Tasman rivals Australia and against Bangladesh. His career bowling average in T20Is currently reads 22.52 with an economy rate of less than eight.
2. Rashid Khan – 161 wickets in 96 matches
Afghanistan spin wizard Rashid Khan has snared 161 wickets in just 96 T20I innings. Ever since he made his T20I debut back in October 2015, Rashid has gone on to become the fastest cricketer in history to reach both, the 100-wicket and 150-wicket landmark figures. It is worth noting that while he completed his first 50 wickets in 31 matches, Khan took just 22 more innings to reach his 100 from 53 matches, eclipsing Nepal’s Sandeep Lamichanne by a match for the all-time world record.
Remarkably, the legendary Afghan cricketer also holds the best bowling average among all bowlers with more than 120 T20I wickets to their names. With an average of 13.80, Rashid Khan also holds a penchant of strangling opposition’s run-scoring rate as his economy reads a formidable 6.08. He has picked up eight four-wicket hauls in his career, the most by any bowler in history. Rashid Khan has also snared two separate five-fers, with his best bowling performance being the 3-5 he picked up against Ireland.
1. Tim Southee – 164 wickets in 126 matches
New Zealand’s all-format great Tim Southee concluded his international career last year with an illustrious haul of 776 wickets. Southee picked up 164 of them in just 123 T20I innings to lead the all-time wicket-taking race in the format. He also made his international debut with a T20I match back in February 2008 against England at Chester-le-Street.
The right-arm fast bowler picked up two five-wicket hauls in his career, both in match-winning causes for New Zealand. Southee’s magnum opus T20I performance remains his astonishing spell of 5-18 against Pakistan at Eden Park in Auckland back in December 2010. He also played a key role in several of New Zealand’s T20 World Cup campaigns, including the time when they reached the finals of the 2021 edition in UAE, picking up eight wickets in seven innings at an impressive economy rate of just 6.50.
