The iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata has borne witness to some of the most thrilling high-scoring encounters in IPL history. Generally known for its sporting nature, the playing surface has also hosted some of the highest team totals ever recorded in the tournament. Over the years, the venue has offered a balanced contest between bat and ball, with certain matches tilting heavily in favour of explosive batting displays.
Celebrating Eden Gardens’ expansive affiliation and Kolkata’s rich history with the IPL, here is a look at five of the highest totals recorded at the venue.
5. KKR 232/2 vs MI, IPL 2019
In match number 47 of the IPL 2019 season played at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, hosts KKR batted first and mounted 232-2 from 20 overs. Opening batters Shubman Gill (76 off 45) and Chris Lynn (54 off 29) blasted scintillating half-centuries and shared a 96-run stand at the top of the order in less than 10 overs. Andre Russell at number three muscled 80 unbeaten runs from just 40 balls with six boundaries and eight huge sixes, while captain Dinesh Karthik also smeared 15* off seven deliveries during the slog overs as the hosts made merry against the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Lasith Malinga and the Pandya brothers.
The total turned out to be a match-winning one for the KKR, as their bowlers kept the Mumbai Indians down to 198-7 despite Hardik Pandya’s 34-ball 91.
4. CSK 235/4 vs KKR, IPL 2023
Chennai Super Kings amassed 235-4 from 20 overs against hosts KKR in match 33 of the IPL 2023 season at the Eden Gardens. Devon Conway compiled 56 from 40 balls with four boundaries and three sixes at the top, before Ajinkya Rahane (71* off 29) and Shivam Dube (50 off 21) went berserk in the backend of the innings. Ravindra Jadeja also chipped in with a swift cameo during the slog overs as CSK went on to clinch a comprehensive 49-run victory against Nitish Rana’s KKR troops.
3. LSG 238/3 vs KKR, IPL 2025
Defending champions and hosts KKR conceded 238 runs to the visiting Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) batters upfront after winning the toss and opting to field first in match 21 of the IPL 2025 season at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens. For the LSG, openers Aiden Markram (47 off 28) and Mitchell Marsh flayed KKR’s opening attack by composing 99 runs in just 10 overs. Marsh blasted 81 runs from 48 balls with six boundaries and five sixes, while number three Nicholas Pooran smeared an unbeaten 36-ball 87* with eight huge maximums and seven fours.
With the additional bonus of 13 extras, LSG recorded one of the highest IPL totals ever formed in Kolkata.
2. KKR 261/6 vs PBKS, IPL 2024
KKR batters took Punjab Kings bowlers to the cleaners in match 42 of the IPL 2024 season at home. Batting first after losing the toss, the Shreyas Iyer-led team mounted 261-6 from 20 overs to record the highest IPL total at the Eden Gardens, at least for the next couple of hours. Opening batters Phil Salt (75 off 37) and Sunil Narine (71 off 32) both smeared over 70 runs each at strike rates of above 200 during their colossal 138-run partnership in 10 overs.
Andre Russell (24 off 12) and captain Shreyas (28 off 10) also chipped in with swift 20s at the death to engulf the likes of Arshdeep Singh, Kagiso Rabada and Sam Curran.
1. PBKS 262/2 vs KKR, IPL 2024
Chasing KKR’s 261, already a record total at the Eden Gardens, Punjab Kings launched an all-out assault on home bowlers in match 42 of the IPL 2024 season. Courtesy of openers Prabhsimran Singh (54 off 20) and Jonny Bairstow, the Punjab Kings raced to 93 runs at the end of the six-over powerplay phase to get off to a flier. While Rilee Rossouw also made crucial runs at number three with a quick 16-ball 26, Bairstow went on to slap one of the best run-chase hundreds of IPL with his six-laden 48-ball 108*.
Shashank Singh at number four further piled on KKR’s misery with 68 unbeaten runs from 28 balls as Punjab Kings cruised towards an emphatic eight-wicket win in just 18.4 overs.
