He made his T20I debut on November 1, 2017, in a match against New Zealand. Although he did not bat in that game, it marked the beginning of his journey in the shortest format of the game.

His T20I brilliance was further highlighted in 2020 during a series against New Zealand. On January 24, 2020, he scored an unbeaten 58 off 29 balls in the first T20I, earning the Man of the Match award. He followed it up with a 44-run performance in the second T20I. In the ODI series that followed, Iyer scored his maiden ODI century against New Zealand.

Shreyas Iyer was named in India's ODI squad for the series against Sri Lanka. He made his ODI debut on December 10, 2017, against Sri Lanka but got out for 9. However, he made a significant impact by scoring 88 runs off 70 balls in the second ODI at Mohali.

He continued to showcase his talent in the limited-overs format. On December 18, 2019, he set a record in an ODI against the West Indies by scoring 31 runs in a single over off Roston Chase, the most by an Indian batsman in ODIs.

Iyer's career, however, faced challenges due to back pain, leading to his withdrawal from the New Zealand series in January 2023 and his eventual drop from the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He underwent back surgery in England, missing the ICC World Test Championship Final.

His Test form also remained strong, as evidenced by his performance against Sri Lanka in March 2022, where he scored two crucial fifties on a challenging pitch, earning the Man of the Match award and the ICC Player of the Month for February 2022. Iyer's journey in the IPL began in February 2015 when he was signed by the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) for a whopping INR 2.6 crores. This signing made him the highest-earning uncapped player in the tournament.

On April 25, 2018, a significant moment in his IPL career arrived when he was announced as the new captain of the Delhi Daredevils, taking over from Gautam Gambhir.

Iyer faced a setback in 2021 when he missed half the IPL season due to a left shoulder injury sustained while playing for India. However, he made a strong comeback after six months, rejoining the Delhi Capitals with renewed vigour.
