Rohit Sharma started his IPL career in 2008 with Deccan Charges. He played for three seasons and won a title in 2009. During the 2011 IPL auction, Rohit was picked up by MI for a whooping salary of INR 9.2 crores. For the 2014-17 cycle, MI retained Rohit for an increased salary of INR 12.5 crores. 

He became the captain in 2013 and took MI to record five IPL titles (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2020), making him one of the most successful leaders in the league. Hence, given his stature, MI increased his salary to INR 15 crore in 2018 and INR 15 crore in 2021. Moreover, MI awarded Rohit for his loyalty and retained him for ₹16.30 crore ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction.

Before the IPL 2025 mega auction took place, rumours around Rohit Sharma’s potential exit were rife. He was removed as captain by Hardik Pandya during IPL 2024, which had agitated most of the fans. However, the 38-year-old was not looking to let go of the franchise that he started from scratch. 

So, both parties agreed to a consensus and later on, Rohit was retained at a whopping salary of INR 16.3 crores. Simply put, Rohit Sharma was retained by Mumbai Indians for IPL 2025. 

Rohit Sharma, who had played three successful seasons with Deccan Chargers, went to the IPL 2011 auction. MI made the move first and, after an intense bidding war, acquired the services of  Rohit for INR 9.2 crores for IPL 2011, and since then, the star player has been playing for the franchise.
