When Yuvraj Singh Fast-Tracked Rohit Sharma's Comeback After WC 2011 Snub

Rohit Sharma, a modern-day legend, underwent the lowest point of his career when he was dropped from India’s 2011 World Cup squad. The team, featuring the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh and a young Virat Kohli, went on to win the coveted trophy at a capacity Wankhede crowd in Mumbai.

As one can expect, Sharma was going through a rough time for missing out from India’s triumphant moment. While he is set to lead the Indian team this time around at the 2023 World Cup at home, the legendary opener recently narrated how 2011 World Cup hero Yuvraj Singh helped him revive his ODI career.

Sharma recalls Yuvraj Singh’s role in ODI comeback

In the lead-up to the Asia Cup 2023 in Sri Lanka, Indian captain Rohit Sharma has recalled how former all-rounder Yuvraj Singh helped him in his international return to the team. While speaking with PTI, Sharma said:

“I was sad and sitting in my room and didn't know what to do next. I remember Yuvraj Singh calling me to his room and taking me out for dinner. He explained to me how it feels when you are left out.

He told me, 'the best thing is that you have so many years in-front of you. As we play in the World Cup, you take this chance to work hard on your game, skills and make a comeback. There is no way that you won't play for India or not get a chance to play in the World Cup.”

Yuvraj Singh’s prophecy, and assistance, came to fruition as Rohit Sharma soon became one of the pillars of India’s batting line-up. The cricketer starred in India’s 2013 Champions Trophy win in England, and top-scored in the 2019 Cricket World Cup.

Sharma’s upcoming 2023 World Cup assignment marks his first as a leader, and it is aptly going to be hosted by India once again.

Prior to the tournament, the ‘Men in Blue’ will compete at the Asia Cup 2023 in Sri Lanka, and will have their campaign launched with a clash against arch-rivals Pakistan on September 2.
