Following the 2019 World Cup, which saw England emerging victorious, the spotlight now shifts to India as it prepares to host the 2023 edition. The 2023 ODI World Cup is all set to commence on October 5th, with the opening match scheduled at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium. India had previously hosted the World Cup in 2011, achieving a triumphant victory.

Building on the 2011 success, India are gearing up to host the ODI World Cup once again. Meanwhile, Gautam Gambhir recently offered his perspective on the 2011 ODI World Cup triumph in light of the impending 2023 competition.

Gambhir fondly recalled the outstanding performances of Yuvraj Singh and Zaheer Khan, who played a pivotal role in the World Cup final.

India clinched the ODI World Cup with a six-wicket triumph against Sri Lanka at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium, securing a historic title on their home ground. During the World Cup Final chase, the duo of MS Dhoni and Gautam Gambhir contributed significantly, putting on a match-winning partnership and adding 109 runs for the fourth wicket before the former was dismissed on 97.

Yuvraj Singh, who was eventually named the 'Player of the Series,' and Dhoni stitched an unbeaten 54-run stand to take the team across the finishing line. In the final moments, Dhoni struck the winning hit—a six over long-on—to finish things off. He remained unbeaten on 91, while Yuvraj was 21 not out off 24 balls.

We just credit Dhoni, says Gautam Gambhir

In an interview with Rev Sportz, Gambhir expressed,

"When you talk about not giving credit, forget about me. I think we haven't given enough credit to Yuvraj Singh as well. We haven't given enough. Tell me how many people talk about Zaheer Khan's first spell in the World Cup final, which had set the tone for us. Five overs, four maidens, one for four, one for one. Tell me how many people remember that. So it is not about players. It is the media. It is the social media. It is the narrative that has been created. It is that individual-obsessed nature, that you're obsessed with individuals so much."

"No individual can ever go on to win the World Cup. That was the case. India would have won every World Cup till now because we worship our heroes or we worship our own players individually so much. We start talking about them. We start treating them beyond a game of cricket. So for me, I think let’s not even talk about my 97. I think there are far more bigger contributions for that competition,” added Gambhir.

Before the 2023 World Cup, Team India is set to participate in the Asia Cup, scheduled to commence on August 30th.

The highly anticipated clash between India and Pakistan, the Asia Cups is set to take place on August 30, 2023. This tournament will be played in a hybrid model for the first time, with Pakistan and Sri Lanka serving as the hosts.
