Along with many superstars of Indian cricket, such as Shreyas Iyer and Ravindra Jadeja, among others, Jasprit Bumrah is celebrating his birthday on December 6. On this special day, let’s look at a feat that the ace fast bowler achieved in 2022—that too on his first outing as India’s captain across formats.

Above all, it was not Bumrah, the bowler, that we witnessed. It was Bumrah, the batsman, who conquered the world.

It was the fifth and final Test of India’s series in England, taking place in Birmingham, in which Bumrah came to bat at No. 10, only above Mohammed Siraj during the first innings. He walked into the middle during the 80th over, and four overs later, what he did is still written in the history books.

More importantly, it was Stuart Broad, one of the very best of all time with the red ball in hand, who was at the receiving end.

While many of Bumrah’s shots were not too conventional, the thing that mattered was that he slammed four fours and two sixes in that over, of which one was against a no ball. To make matters worse for himself, Broad also bowled a wide delivery, which went for four runs. In total, when the over finished, Broad conceded as many as 35 runs—the most expensive over in the history of Test cricket.

However, Bumrah’s heroics went in vain as England pulled off an astonishing 378-run chase to win the contest by seven wickets. Bumrah, nevertheless, courtesy of picking up 23 wickets across five matches, was named the Player of the Series.
