On this day in 2019, India skipper Rohit Sharma made history by becoming the first batsman to score five centuries in a single ICC Cricket World Cup. This remarkable feat was achieved during India's final group stage match against Sri Lanka at Headingley Cricket Ground in Leeds.

Rohit’s 27th ODI century was instrumental in securing a commanding seven-wicket victory for India. His fifth century of the 2019 World Cup allowed him to surpass the previous record held by Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara, who scored four centuries in the 2015 edition.

Rohit’s extraordinary form included centuries against South Africa, Pakistan, England, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. This incredible consistency played a crucial role in India’s journey to the semi-finals. His World Cup campaign began with an unbeaten 122 against South Africa, guiding India to a six-wicket win despite a challenging bowling attack.

His second century, a scintillating 140 against Pakistan, helped India post a formidable total of 336 for 5 and secured a win in the thrilling match. In Birmingham, Rohit scored his third and fourth centuries: a valiant 102 against England and a crucial 104 against Bangladesh, ensuring India’s spot in the semi-finals.

Rohit’s fifth century, a 103 against Sri Lanka, capped off his remarkable run in the league stages. Although India's World Cup campaign ended with a semi-final loss to New Zealand, Rohit’s record-breaking performance stood out as a highlight, with his tally of 648 runs being the third highest in a single World Cup edition.
