Prabhsimran is definitely one of the most valuable players of the Punjab Kings this season. His explosive knocks not only catapulted PBKS to second place in the IPL standings but also ignited hope in a household shadowed by adversity.

While Prabhsimran Singh’s bat silenced critics on the field, his father, Sardar Surjit Singh, battles kidney failure at home, clinging to every run his son scores as a lifeline of joy. For the Singhs, this IPL season is bittersweet. Prabhsimran’s 437 runs in 11 innings have made him PBKS’s breakout star, but his father’s deteriorating health forecasts shadows.

Surjit, undergoing dialysis thrice weekly, finds solace only in his son’s performances. “The only time he smiles these days is when he sees Prabhsimran bat,” reveals Satwinderpal Singh, the cricketer’s uncle and mentor.

A Son's Promise To His Father

Before every PBKS match, Satwinderpal admits that he carries Surjit to the living room to watch the match of Punjab on television.

“If Simmu scores, he forgets his pain. If he plays a rash shot, Surjit shouts, ‘Khotte aaram naal khel (play sensibly)!’” he shares. The morning after the LSG game, a frail Surjit chided Prabhsimran during a video call, “Why throw your wicket after 91? Even while gasping for breath, he lectures Simmu. I have to remind him to praise the boy!” Satwinderpal laughs.

Prabhsimran’s newfound maturity—a far cry from his earlier “flashy cameos”—stems from a vow to his family and PBKS coach Ricky Ponting. “He promised us two centuries this season,” says Satwinderpal. Though the milestone remains elusive, Ponting lauds his growth.

"I think you're starting to see why I was so keen to retain Prabhsimran. He's a very, very good young player, and he's very keen to bring success to this team, and that showed with the way that he played tonight. I sort of challenged him in the team meeting to go on and get a 100 in this match, and unfortunately, Prabh fell just a little bit short of that," Ponting said.

Prabhsimran's Fight For The Team and His Father

With three straight fifties, Prabhsimran’s focus is clear. “I want to convert starts into big scores.” His aggression has reenergized PBKS’s playoff bid, but for the Singhs, every boundary carries a deeper meaning. “Simmu’s success adds days to Surjit’s life,” says Satwinderpal.

As PBKS eyes its first IPL title in a decade, Prabhsimran’s story transcends cricket and becomes a tale of a son’s runs scripting his father’s fight against time.
