After withdrawing from India's tour of South Africa and subsequently missing a few Ranji games, Indian batter Ishan Kishan was dropped by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) from the annual retainer central contracts 2024. The news came as a shock to many, as the BCCI had previously instructed every cricketer to participate in the domestic tournaments.
BCCI Shocks Everyone After Dropping Ishan Kishan From The Central Contract List 2024
In what came as a massive shocker for everyone in 2024, Indian batters Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer were dropped from the BCCI central contract list, which featured prominent players.
This was a massive heartbreak for both the players, as they failed to feature in the recent round of Ranji Trophy matches after the BCCI's strict directives, led by secretary Jay Shah. While Iyer was deemed to be injured, it was revealed that Kishan was not in the best frame of mind to play domestic or any form of cricket.
However, they both had to bear the brunt of the head body, which was not ready to forgive them, as they were shown the exit door from the central contract list.
Previously, the BCCI had sent notices to every player regarding the prioritisation of domestic cricket, which was then complemented by then-skipper Rohit Sharma, who backed the governing body's idea and mentioned that it was necessary for players to participate in domestic cricket when not playing internationally.
Nonetheless, when both were dropped, the board stated that they did not consider either player, as they preferred those who had featured in domestic cricket during the specified year.
The fact that this came out after both of them were primarily in India's ODI World Cup 2023 squad didn't go down well with them, who took it quite personally.
Ishan Kishan Revealed The Reason After Missing Ranji Games
The left-handed batter, who made his mark in international cricket with big scoring shots and a high strike rate, revealed in an interview that he was not in the right frame of mind to feature in the red-ball tournament, the Ranji Trophy, as he was prioritizing his mental health and, due to this, he had to skip the domestic matches, which also caused quite an uproar in the office of the apex body.
"I took a break and I think it was normal. There is a rule that if you want to make a comeback, you must perform in domestic cricket. It is as simple as that. Now, it was very different for me to play domestic cricket as it was not making any sense. I was not in a frame of mind to play, and that’s why I took a break from international cricket. It doesn’t make sense that you take a break from international cricket and then you go and play domestic matches," Kishan said in an exclusive interview with the Indian Express.
However, later, both of them were reinstated into the BCCI central contract list for the year 2025, beginning in April, shortly after Kishan complied with the guidelines and featured for Jharkhand in domestic cricket.
In fact, the left-hander was even in reckoning for India's ongoing tour of England for the fifth Test, where Rishabh Pant is ruled out. However, due to injury issues, the batter has ruled himself out, and reportedly, the management is now looking at someone else after Kishan's confirmation.
