A video of Gautam Gambhir from 2020 praising Sanju Samson has resurfaced, reigniting debates over Samson's exclusion from India's squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. In the video, Gambhir stated, “If Sanju Samson doesn’t play for India, it’s not his loss, it’s India’s loss.” These words have gained fresh significance following the selectors’ decision to pick Rishabh Pant over Samson as the second wicketkeeper alongside KL Rahul.
Samson’s Recent Form vs. Selectors’ Decision
Sanju Samson has been in outstanding form recently. In his last five T20Is, he scored three centuries and boasts an ODI average of 56.66 in 16 matches with a strike rate of 99.60. His 108-run knock against South Africa in December 2023 showcased his ability to shine on the big stage. Despite these stats, Samson was overlooked for the Champions Trophy, sparking frustration among fans and cricket experts alike.
Rishabh Pant, who has struggled for consistency in white-ball cricket, was chosen over Samson. This decision has led many to question whether the selectors are prioritizing potential over current form.
Gautam Gambhir’s Support for Samson
Gautam Gambhir, India’s head coach, has been a vocal advocate for Sanju Samson. Known for backing young talent, Gambhir’s 2020 remarks about Samson not being adequately supported by the selection committee have resurfaced. As head coach, Gambhir has given Samson opportunities in T20Is, but the Champions Trophy snub has raised doubts about whether his support carries weight with the selectors.
Adding to the controversy, Samson reportedly skipped a three-day preparatory camp organised by the Kerala State Cricket Association (KSCA) ahead of the Vijay Hazare Trophy. This decision, according to KSCA President Jayesh George, played a role in his exclusion. While Samson’s absence was explained as a personal decision, it seems to have influenced the selectors’ stance.
On the cricketing front, Sanju Samson has been included in India’s squad for the upcoming T20I series against England, beginning January 22 in Kolkata.
