MS Dhoni is regarded as one of the greatest cricket captains ever. He maintained a calm presence on the field and excelled in pressure situations, often finishing matches with his batting prowess. Despite his popularity as an player, Dhoni faced various controversies, both on and off the field.

In this article, let's discuss three controversies of which MS Dhoni has been a part.

1. MS Dhoni And Amrapali Controversy

The Amrapali Group was a prominent real estate developer and was involved in a major legal and financial controversy over its failure to deliver thousands of residential flats promised to homebuyers in the Greater Noida and Noida region. Between 2010 and 2014, the company proposed the construction of approximately 42,000 flats but has failed to fulfil its commitments.

In related to this case, former cricketer MS Dhoni, who was then the brand ambassador for the Amrapali Group, found himself in the midst of the controversy.

The group’s failure to deliver the promised properties and the financial mismanagement prompted buyers to raise questions about Dhoni’s association with the company, but later on he removed himself as the brand ambassador.

2. MS Dhoni’s Sudden Exit From RPS Captaincy

MS Dhoni's association in IPL faced an unexpected twist in 2016 when he briefly captained the Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS). However, a dramatic decision by the franchise before the 2017 season to replace him as captain with Steve Smith was shocking.

The reasons behind the decision to replace Dhoni still remains a mystery. Speculation regarding the internal dynamics between Dhoni and RPS owner Sanjiv Goenka swirled during that time but no official statements were made.

Dhoni had been the face of CSK since the inception of the IPL in 2008. However, due to a ban imposed on CSK following the 2013 spot-fixing scandal, Dhoni found himself in a different role during the 2016-17 IPL seasons.

3. MS Dhoni's CSK Accused Of 2013 Spot-Fixing Scandal

The 2013 spot-fixing scandal remains one of the darkest chapters in the history of the IPL, and for MS Dhoni. The incident involved allegations of corruption, match-fixing, and illegal betting, that tarnished the reputation of the CSK and MS Dhoni. The scandal came to light in May 2013, when Delhi Police arrested three RR players S Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila, and Ankeet Chavan.

However, the controversy did not end with the RR players. The investigation soon turned its focus on CSK, with the franchise’s owner, Gurunath Meiyappan, being questioned for his alleged links to bookies and betting syndicates. As captain of franchise then, MS Dhoni found himself dragged into the scandal, despite there being no direct evidence linking him to the betting activities.
