Team India is up against a mountain to climb at the Oval after Australia set them a record total of 444 to chase in the ongoing World Test Championship final.

No team in the history of Test match cricket has ever chased more than 416, and when it comes to the Kia Oval, the highest 4th innings total ever chased is 263 (by England v Australia in 1902).

India has been in similar situations at this venue in the past.

In 1979, India, riding on a magnificent double ton from opener Sunil Gavaskar, came agonizingly close to overhauling the target of 438, set by England, only to fall 9 runs short.

Then, in 2018, India rode on brilliant centuries from KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant to come close to the target of 464, but ultimately fell 120-odd runs short.

Earlier, Australia rode on brilliant counterattacking knocks from Alex Carey and Mitch Starc to pile up an overall lead of 443.

At the time of writing, India are 41 for 1 in 7 overs. Shubman Gill departed just before the tea break.
