Indian captain Rohit Sharma top-scored for his side with 87 tense runs against England in their recent World Cup 2023 showdown in Lucknow. The dynamic opener took Team India’s scoring charge following their stuttering start, one which featured quick dismissals of Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer and in-form veteran Virat Kohli.

Notably, Sharma ended up scaling a number of records and new heights in international cricket through the course of his 87-run effort.

Rohit Sharma unlocks this milestone as Indian captain

Rohit Sharma belted 10 boundaries and three sixes in his 87-run knock to guide Team India towards a competitive total upfront following their early jitters at the top. Through the course of his innings, the cricketer completed 4,000 international runs as Indian captain.

Sharma was appointed as India’s full-time skipper following Virat Kohli’s exit from the role in early 2022. The dashing opening batsman also led the ‘Men in Blue’ sporadically during Kohli’s run as leader, whenever the latter decided to take a break from the game.

Apart from unlocking a huge captaincy milestone, Rohit Sharma also completed 18,000 international runs across all formats since his debut, becoming the fifth Indian batsman and 20th overall to do so.

Sharma has emerged as one of the leading run-getters from the 2023 World Cup, featuring in an elite batting list at number four behind Quinton de Kock, David Warner and Rachin Ravindra.

A win over England at this stage will sustain Sharma’s unbeaten run in the competition, thus re-affirming India’s position at the top of the 2023 World Cup points table.
