Quinton de Kock gatecrashed Bangladesh bowlers’ party with his third World Cup 2023 ton and the 20th of his glittering ODI career to revive South Africa from their top-order setback in Wankhede. The elegant left-hander shared 131 runs with interim captain Aiden Markram and raced to his hundred from just 101 balls in the 35th over of the innings.

Through the course of his knock, Quinton also displaced former captain AB de Villiers for a huge South African ODI record, just weeks after he had announced his retirement from the format.

ODI outbound Quinton de Kock sets new heights

Quinton de Kock notched up his 20th ODI century through the course of his Wankhede epic against Bangladesh at the 2023 World Cup. The wicketkeeper-batsman achieved the feat in the 150th match of his ODI career, and did so at the age of 30 years and 311 days.

Through his latest run-riot in Mumbai, the elegant striker became the youngest South African in history to complete 20 ODI hundreds, achieving the same quicker than former teammates and Proteas legends AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla. Here is a list of four youngest South African batters to register 20 ODI centuries:

  • Quinton de Kock - 30 years and 311 days
  • AB de Villiers - 31 years and 10 days
  • Hashim Amla - 31 years and 337 days
  • Herschelle Gibbs - 33 years and 345 days

Quinton de Kock, who did not have a single century on his World Cup profile until a month ago, now has three to his name from just five matches of the 2023 edition in India.

The cricketer bludgeoned centuries in successive games against Sri Lanka and Australia upfront before sustaining minor setbacks against Netherlands and England in the subsequent two fixtures. The dashing opener returned to his groove by dropping yet another triple-figure score against Bangladesh to elevate his side after two early wickets.
