Why Are Gerald Coetzee And Marco Jansen Not Playing IND vs SA 3rd T20I?

South Africa took the field against India in the series-deciding third T20I in Johannesburg without the services of their in-form young fast bowlers, Gerald Coetzee and Marco Jansen.

As it turns out, the move behind excluding the two cricketers from the playing XI was a tactical decision from the South African team management, in lieu of their forthcoming Test series against India.

South Africa drop Gerald Coetzee and Marco Jansen

After winning the toss and opting to field first in Johannesburg, South African captain Aiden Markram confirmed that the team management has decided to drop fast bowlers Gerald Coetzee and Marco Jansen from the playing XI for their series-decider against India.

The two cricketers have been rested to prepare for South Africa’s subsequent high-profile Test series against the visitors, slated to commence from December 26 onwards in Centurion.

Both Coetzee and Jansen are also not a part of Proteas’ three-match ODI line-up, which will be taking place between December 17 and December 21 later this month.

Bowling all-rounder Nandre Burger has been handed his maiden T20I cap by replacing Coetzee, while spinner Keshav Maharaj was called back into the side in place of Jansen.

Coetzee picked up three key wickets during his side’s five-wicket win over India in the first T20I in Port Elizabeth a couple of days ago. Jansen, on the other hand, accounted for the early dismissal of Yashasvi Jaiswal in the game.

The two 23-year-olds recently took part in South Africa’s semi-final crusade at the 2023 World Cup in India, where their pace pedigree turned out to be a crucial factor in their splendid league stage run throughout the tournament.
