In their pursuit of a mammoth target of 444 runs, India got off to a disastrous start, losing their biggest hope Virat Kohli for 49 in the seventh over of the fifth day of WTC final. Although India began the day cautiously, with Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane negotiating the Australian pace duo of Cummins and Scott Boland, a magnificent catch from Steve Smith caused the carnage for them, leaving Kohli shell-shocked.

The incident occurred in the 47th over, when Boland came to bowl his fifteenth over in the innings. After beating Kohli with an absolute peach, the seamer from Victoria finally lured the Indian legend into an expansive drive, inducing a healthy outside edge in this process.

The ball flew towards the second slip, where Smith dived towards his right to grab a stunning catch, compelling Kohli to make his way back to the dugout.

When the day began, India had an uphill task, needing 280 runs to win with seven wickets in hand. However, Kohli's dismissal was a massive blow to their hopes, denting their chances by a significant margin.

India's miseries didn't end with Kohli's departure, as Ravindra Jadeja followed him, being dismissed by Boland for a duck two balls later. As of writing, they are 185 for five, with Rahane and KS Bharat batting on 31* and 4*, respectively.
