[Watch] Steve Smith ‘Hilariously’ Waits For Umpires’ Final Call Despite Clear Cut Catch

Waiting for the third umpire’s call is normal, and there should not be any discussion if the final call is regarding LBW or an edge. However, in general, if a player takes a catch and it gets reviewed for a clean one, batsmen immediately start returning to the pavilion before even waiting for the verdict on the big screen.

On Wednesday during Australia’s World Cup match against the Netherlands, however, Steve Smith acted in the exact opposite manner, watching as Roelof van der Merwe took a spectacular catch and then waiting at the crease for the final call.

Smith’s reaction made headlines more because the Netherlands just had a heartbreak after an extraordinary catch was turned down by the third umpire. Roelof van der Merwe was the main character there as well, but Marais Erasmus decided it was not a fair catch. That gave David Warner a lifeline.

Immediately after in the following over, when Smith, batting on 71 off 68 balls, tried to cut Aryan Dutt uppishly, the former Australian captain did not get the elevation he wanted. Placed at backward point, Roelof van der Merwe took an absolute beauty of a catch to end his stay, but the on-field umpires had doubts in their mind, and wanted the TV umpire to have another look.

The replay showed it was clean, as van der Merwe used the reverse-cup technique to grab a superb catch.

As of writing, Australia are 173/2 after 26.3 overs, with David Warner batting on 80*.
