Shubman Gill was promoted as the vice-captain of the Indian ODI side ahead of the Sri Lanka tour, and he would have hoped for a bright start to the series. However, he failed to deliver in the first ODI, and scored just 16 off 35 balls as he threw his wicket away in the 13th over.

It was a full delivery on off from Dunith Wellalage and Shubman Gill who was struggling to get going, tried to do something fancy and went for an expansive sweep shot. He ended up a big top edge though and the ball went high in the air towards the cover region where wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis settled under it and took a fine catch.

After the wicket of Gill, Rohit Sharma also departed after scoring a quickfire fifty. Washington Sundar was promoted to number 4, but he could also not last long and departed on just 5 as India were reduced from 75-0 to 87-3. Earlier, Sri Lanka scored 230 on the board courtesy a valiant unbeaten 67 by Dunith Wellalage, and the Sri Lankan youngster has surely proven his worth again as an all-rounder against a quality team like India.
