The Pallekele International Cricket Stadium witnessed an exhibition of classical batting as Indian opener, Shubman Gill smashed some scintillating strokes in Match 5 of Asia Cup 2023.

Shubman Gill's backfoot brilliance left fans in awe

The young prodigy stole the limelight, showing his dynamic batting range, particularly off the backfoot as he took on Nepal's bowling attack with grace and gusto.

Chasing a respectable total of 230 set by the Nepalese side, India began their innings on a muted note. Indian captain Rohit Sharma, usually known for his explosive starts played out six dots in the opening over, perhaps sizing up the conditions and opposition. But little did fans know that they were about to be treated to a spectacle in the next.

Enter Sompal Kami, looking to exploit the conditions with his pace and bounce. He bowled two short deliveries outside off that met with Gill's genius. With an upright stance, and swift movement onto the backfoot, Gill punched both deliveries, one after the other to the boundary ropes.

And Kami, probably second-guessing his strategy by now attempted to outfox the young opener. But the fifth ball of the over, much to the spectators' delight was once again dispatched in a similar fashion.

As the stadium buzzed with appreciation for this batting prodigy, rain gods intervened. The recurring uninvited guest of Asia Cup 2023 decided to halt the proceedings.

The scoreboard read 17/1 in 2.1 overs, with India still 214 runs shy of the target. Gill's contributed a breezy 12 off 6 balls while Rohit seemed content playing the supporting role with 4 runs off 7 deliveries.

Earlier, Nepal put up a commendable total of 230. Led by Rohit Paudel, Nepal batsmen stood tall against a strong Indian bowling lineup which had the likes of Mohammed Siraj, Mohammed Shami, Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja.

However, the guile and experience of Jadeja were evident as he clinched three crucial wickets and gave away only 40 runs in his 10 overs.
