Afghanistan squandered away their perfect start against Bangladesh with a sequence of middle-over wickets. Turning up in Dharamshala for their opening match of the 2023 World Cup, openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran raced to 47 in just eight overs, before the latter became Afghanistan’s first casualty of the innings.

Gurbaz missed out on his half-century while Rahmat Shah and captain Hashmatullah Shahidi both failed to get going, and their dismissals in quick succession led to a colossal batting collapse within the Afghanistan camp. Having solidified themselves at 112-2 at one stage, Bangladesh bowlers’ combined efforts reduced them to 156 all out nearly an hour later in the game.

Among the flurry of Afghanistan wickets, they also lost star all-rounder Rashid Khan as he was cleaned up for just nine by Bangladeshi off-break Mehidy Hasan Miraz.

Rashid Khan, in his attempt of staging Afghanistan’s recovery, lost his leg stump to become Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s second victim of the innings. Khan tried to work the ball towards his leg side for a single, only to manage an inside edge onto his stumps to be clean bowled for just nine.

The cricketer’s struggling stay at the crease lasted just 16 deliveries as Afghanistan reduced to 150-7 with his departure.

Following Rashid Khan’s dismissal, Afghanistan eventually dusted out for just 156 in 37.2 overs. Their final three batters all fell in a space of three overs without adding a run.

Meanwhile, Mehidy Hasan Miraz finished his spell with 3-25 from nine overs, while captain Shakib Al Hasan claimed 3-30 from his eight as both emerged as the chief architects behind Afghanistan’s batting collapse.
