[Watch] Rajat Patidar Fails To Make A Mark Again, Departs For A Six-Ball Duck

Indian batter Rajat Patidar's dismal start to his Test career continued with the bat as he fell for a six-ball duck in the ongoing fourth Test match of the series against England in Ranchi on Monday.

A stalwart in domestic cricket, Patidar has struggled to adapt to the challenges of international cricket. Despite receiving a significant opportunity as a replacement for Virat Kohli, who pulled out of the first two Tests and then the last three against England, Patidar has been unable to capitalize on his limited chances.

Making his debut in the second Test in Visakhapatnam, he showed promise by scoring 32 runs in the first innings. However, he has failed to translate that promise into consistent performances. His difficulties were highlighted in the current match when Shoaib Bashir deceived him with a traditional off-spin delivery on just the second ball of the 27th over.

Bashir delivered a traditional off-break, drifting in with bounce as Patidar tentatively pushed forward. The ball also gained some extra bounce, striking the inside edge before popping up. Positioned at backward short leg, Ollie Pope made a sharp diving catch to his right.

Similarly, in the first innings, Patidar fell to Bashir after scoring 17 runs from 42 balls, laced with four boundaries.

His dismissal marked a sudden shift in momentum for India, from 84 for no loss to 100 for 3. Earlier in the session, Yashasvi Jaiswal fell to Joe Root, followed by Rohit Sharma's departure off Tom Hartley's bowling after reaching a well-crafted fifty.

With a string of poor scores across the series, Patidar's spot in the team has been increasingly precarious. He held onto his place in the team because KL Rahul was still sidelined with an injury sustained in the series opener in Hyderabad. However, it's expected that both Kohli and Rahul will reclaim their spots in the playing XI whenever they return.

In contrast, while Sarfaraz Khan has thrived since his debut in Rajkot, Patidar has encountered significant struggles. Should Rahul recover in time, he's likely to return for the final Test in Dharamshala. However, even if he isn't available, it's improbable that Patidar will maintain his spot in the playing XI, especially with Devdutt Padikkal ready as a backup option.
