Vidarbha displayed all-round brilliance to defeat Karnataka and clinch victory by 127 runs in the quarter-final 1 of the Ranji Trophy on Tuesday. Their all-round brilliance included a brilliant run-out from Atharva Taide to dismiss Karnataka’s Dheeraj Gowda for two runs in the second innings.

The incident took place in the 48th over of the match after wicketkeeper Srinivas Sharath gently nudged the ball toward offside, with the Punjab Kings batter quick to react. Taide made the ground quickly to grab the ball with one hand from the silly mid-off position and throw it directly at the stumps. The batter was well away from the crease when the ball directly hit the stumps, with Karnataka losing their seventh wicket.

The fielding effort from Taide comes not only as a boost for his state team but also for the Punjab Kings ahead of the IPL 2024. Although the opener’s place in the playing XI for the Punjab franchise is far from booked, his effort in the match makes a good case for his inclusion.

Incidentally, Taide had also delivered with the bat in the quarter-finals, scoring 109 runs off 244 deliveries in the first innings. He was the pick of the batters for Vidarbha in the first innings with 16 boundaries and one hit over the fence laced in his cautious knock. He was, however, dismissed for 25 runs off 50 deliveries in the second innings.

Taide holds the reputation of a skilled stroke maker. The left-handed batter has featured in seven matches in the lucrative tournament but has yet to display his full potential, as he has scored a paltry 186 runs in seven innings at an average of 26.57.
