Bangladesh’s ploy of promoting Mehidy Hasan Miraz to the top order worked perfectly against Afghanistan in Match 4 of the Asia Cup 2023 at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore. The 25-year-old was given the opportunity in place of Tanzid Hasan, who was dropped following a two-ball duck against Sri Lanka in their tournament opener.

Although Miraz was initially played second fiddle to Mohammad Naim, who got Bangladesh off to a rollicking start after Shakib Al Hasan decided to bat first. After Naim's departure, Towhid Hridoy followed immediately, and Miraz took charge from thereon.

Miraz reached to three-digit mark with the help of six fours and two sixes. He took 115 balls to get there, as Bangladesh posted 234/2 in 40.2 overs at the time of writing.

Najmul Hossain Shanto gave the support Miraz required as the duo steadied the ship after losing two wickets in quick succession. The Bangladeshi all-rounder's primary strength has always been his bowling, but on Sunday (September 3), during the Afghanistan match, it did not feel like the same.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz Notches Excellent Hundred against Afghanistan

This is a must-win match for Bangladesh, who suffered a five-wicket defeat against Sri Lanka in their tournament opener a few days ago. If Shakib Al Hasan and his boys lose this, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka will automatically qualify for the Super Four round.
