Fortune Barishal secured a thrilling 4-wicket win over Durbar Rajshahi in the opening match of the Bangladesh Premier League at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Monday (December 30). The Rajshahi innings was anchored by the Yasir Ali's remarkable contribution of 94 runs from 47 balls. Skipper Anamul Haque also contributed a solid 58 runs off 43 balls.
Mushfiqur Rahim Departs In Disappointment
Chasing the target, Barishal found themselves in deep trouble early on. Star batter Najmul Shanto was dismissed for a duck, followed shortly by the departure of captain Tamim Iqbal.
The pressure mounted on Barishal's middle-order, and when Mushfiqur Rahim walked back by just scoring 13 runs. The incident occured in the third ball of the 6th over, when Murad delivered an arm ball as Mushfiqur Rahim attempted to sweep the delivery but ended up getting a thick top edge that flew straight into the hands of deep backward square leg. The catch was safely received by Samarakoon.
Despite the early setbacks, Barishal’s lower order mounted a strong resistance. Mahmudullah Riyad and Faheem Faheem Ashraf made valuable contributions and ensured that the team remained in the hunt.
Despite a rocky start to their chase, Fortune Barishal held their nerve and managed to chase down Durbar Rajshahi's total of 197. At the time of writing, Fortune Barishal has won the first match of the BPL 2024 by four wickets against Durbar Rajshahi.
Tamim Iqbal-led Fortune Barishal will next play against Rangpur Riders on January 2, 2025.
