The opening day of the 1st Test between New Zealand and England at Hagley Oval produced a compelling contest where Kane Williamson stepped up against Ben Stokes, thumping cracking boundaries. On his way back from injury, Williamson hammered back-to-back boundaries to Stokes' freebies.

On Day 1 of the first Test between England and New Zealand, it was England that decided to bowl first on a green-tinged pitch, but immediate rewards soon came for them as Gus Atkinson got rid of Devon Conway in the second over. Still, a consistent fightback, led by the sublime knock of 93 runs by Kane Williamson, saw the hosts end the day with a competitive total of 319/8.

Kane Williamson tests Ben Stokes' patience

Returning from injury, veteran Kiwi batter Kane Williamson showed why he remains the backbone of New Zealand's batting lineup in red ball format. Despite a torrid start against England's pace attack, Williamson adjusted beautifully, showing his class once again under pressure.

Taking on English skipper Ben Stokes, Williamson hammered him for a thumping boundary to deep mid-wicket. Stokes was feeding him short half-volleys and short balls, and Williamson was absolutely ready to punish him.

In the 22nd over, Williamson once again went after Stokes with back-to-back boundaries. An overpitched delivery was beautifully driven for four before Williamson pulled yet another short-pitched ball for a boundary to register two consecutive boundaries. Stokes was livid with himself as he had no answer to Kane's carnage.

Kane Williamson scored 93 off 197 balls in his return game, while Tom Latham and Rachin Ravindra added crucial runs, with Latham making a solid 47. Glenn Phillips's 41, not out, helped late to the cause of the innings.

The pick of the English bowlers was Shoaib Bashir who took 4/69. Atkinson and Carse also picked up 2 wickets each as New Zealand kept things in hand with 319/8 at stumps. With the match perfectly poised now, the fans can expect to see another exciting day of Test cricket on Day 2.
