The Paarl Royals kicked off their SA20 campaign in style with a commanding 9-wicket victory over defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape on January 11. While 18-year-old sensation Lhuan-dre Pretorius stole headlines with a blistering 97 on debut, it was Joe Root’s calm and calculated half-century that provided the perfect foil for Pretorius' explosive innings.
Winning the toss and opting to bat first, Sunrisers Eastern Cape had a rocky start, losing two quick wickets in the powerplay. However, a stellar 102-run partnership between skipper Aiden Markram and power-hitter Tristan Stubbs helped steady the ship. Their combined efforts propelled the Sunrisers to a respectable 171/5 in 20 overs.
Among the Paarl bowlers, Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Kwena Maphaka impressed with two wickets each. However, the rest of the attack struggled to make an impact, allowing Sunrisers to recover from early setbacks.
Joe Root's Sensational Half-Century
The Royals’ reply was clinical, spearheaded by the experienced Joe Root and the fearless Lhuan-dre Pretorius. Opening the innings, Root showcased his trademark elegance, compiling a composed 62 off 44 deliveries. His innings included 4 fours and a towering six, anchoring the chase with precision.
The duo’s 132-run partnership not only dismantled the Sunrisers’ bowling attack but also ensured that the Royals remained in control throughout the chase. Pretorius’ dream debut came to an abrupt end when Marco Jansen trapped, just three runs shy of a well-deserved century.
However it is just the start of the tournament, Paarl Royals are at the third position of the points table with Sunrisers Eastern Cape at the last position of the points table.
