In a rather uncharacteristic fielding display, the Australian team, famous for their flawless fielding standards, committed a series of blunders in their World Cup 2023 face-off against South Africa on Thursday in Lucknow.

AUS vs SA: Australia committed six fielding blunders vs South Africa

The five-time World champions spilt as many as six catches, an anomaly for a team that consists of some of the best fielders in the modern game.

Australian skipper Pat Cummins, unfortunately, was one of the culprits to let a catch slip through his fingers. Marcus Stoinis, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa followed suit, and even wicketkeeper Josh Inglis couldn't evade the contagion of drops. Sean Abbott, who was on the field as a substitute, too, found himself on the list of culprits.

Benefitting from the series of lifelines granted to them, the South African team took the game by the scruff of the neck, setting an impressive score of 311/7 in their 50 overs. Quinton de Kock emerged as the star performer, scoring a splendid 109, while Aiden Markram chipped in with a crucial 56.

The silver lining for the Australians came in the form of Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Starc, each claiming two wickets, while Josh Hazlewood, Cummins, and Zampa added one each to their tally.

The pressure is now squarely on the Australians, who are tasked with executing a record-breaking chase if they hope to register their first win of the World Cup 2023 campaign. The team's historical best chase in the tournament stands at 287 runs, which they achieved against New Zealand in the World Cup in 1996. This highlights the magnitude of the challenge ahead, especially against the formidable South African bowling lineup.

Meanwhile, this stumble in the field will be a particularly bitter pill to swallow for the Australian camp, as they are already trailing in the World Cup 2023 race, having lost their inaugural match to India by six wickets.
